Hairrari NYC · founded by Magda Ryczko · since 2011
The founder
Magda Ryczko grew up in Poland and learned to cut hair the hard way — in salons that called themselves classic, traditional, professional. In practice, that meant hierarchical and sexist. She worked her way through twelve salons across NYC and Westchester. Then in one week, she got fired from two of them.
In 2011, she opened her first shop in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, with a simple bet: build the salon she had always wanted to work in. Pronouns asked, not assumed. Prices listed, not whispered. No upsell, no judgment, no "are you sure you want that short?"
Two years later, the Bushwick chair opened. Then East Village. Then Los Angeles. Fifteen years later, Hairrari is three NYC shops (Williamsburg, Bushwick, East Village) plus one in LA. Magda still cuts. She still trains every new barber on the floor. And the press has caught up — Vogue, dapperQ, GO Magazine, Honeysuckle, Waxoh have all sent writers through the door.
The Bushwick chair is the heart of the neighborhood: queer, trans, Latino, artists, immigrants, people who got tired of explaining themselves to a barber.
"I just do whatever they want. I don't try to force clients to get other things."
— Magda Ryczko, founder
